Why does a good God allow suffering?

Suffering2 min readPsalm 34:18

This is the question the Bible takes longest to answer, and it does not answer it with a formula. Job’s friends try formulas and are rebuked for it. What Job gets instead is God’s presence and a pile of questions back.

Scripture says three things carefully. Suffering is not the way things were meant to be — it is a wound in creation, and the whole creation “groans” waiting for repair (Romans 8:22). God is not distant from it — Jesus wept at a grave (John 11:35) and cried out from the cross, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34). And it will not last — Revelation 21:4 promises a day when every tear is wiped away and death itself is gone.

That is not a satisfying answer to someone in the middle of loss, and it is not meant to be used as one. If you are in it right now, you do not need a theory. You need presence, honesty, and permission to grieve.

If you are the one sitting with someone who is suffering, resist explaining. Sit down. Listen. Say less than you want to. The ministry of presence is not a lesser answer; it is the one Scripture models.

Look it up

Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

Psalm 34:18

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more. The first things have passed away.

Revelation 21:4
